What is the standard tip in India?

Is a service charge the same as a tip? Is it mandatory in India?
No. Under the Central Consumer Protection Authority's July 2022 guidelines, restaurants and hotels can't add a service charge to your bill automatically or by default, or collect it under another name — any tip is your choice. In March 2025 the Delhi High Court upheld these guidelines. If it's added, you can ask for it to be removed or contact the National Consumer Helpline (1915).
How do I calculate a 10% tip quickly?
Move the decimal point one place to the left. On a ₹1,850 bill, 10% is ₹185. For 5%, halve that (₹92.50); for 15%, add the two (₹277.50).
How do I split a bill with a tip between friends?
Enter the bill, the tip percentage and the number of people. The calculator adds the tip and divides the total equally — for example, ₹3,000 with 10% tip split between 4 people is ₹825 each.
Should I tip if a service charge is already on the bill?
In India, a service charge can't be added by default and you can ask for it to be removed — but if you choose to pay it, you don't need to tip on top. Abroad, check the bill: where service is already included, an extra tip is optional.
Can I use this tip calculator in any currency?
Yes. The maths is the same in any currency — enter the bill in rupees, dollars, pounds or dirhams and read the results in the same currency (the ₹ sign is just a label).
